KAT's Miaou Cattery was a small Himalayan and Persian cattery located in SouthWest Nova Scotia. In 2012 our cattery was permanently closed when we sold our house and moved; but we still have some of our cats, now neutered / spayed spoiled pets. I sure miss having kittens around!
A note on breeding Persians and Himalayans together:
Many people are under the impression that breeding Persians and Himalayans together produces a mixed breed (Himalayan-Persian, etc.). In fact, a Himalayan is actually a TYPE of Persian, sometimes known as a Color-Point Persian. Offspring result in either Persian OR Himalayan.
My Cattery Name:
After many months of trying to come up with a meaningful and fun cattery name, I realized that my family's initials - Kim, Ashton, and Tyler (myself and my 2 sons) spells KAT! Add a French Meow and we have KAT's Miaou! ;)
My cattery name is registered with both the CFA and ACFA.
Your Kitten
KITTY LITTER
For the health of your kitten, I strongly discourage the use of clumping clay litters (the most commonly used litter).
This type of litter sticks to paws and noses. Your cat then swallows it, and it will harden and expand from the moisture in the cat’s digestive system, just like it does in the litter box!
When your cat digs in the litter box, clay dust gets stirred up and the cat breathes it into his lungs. Again, moisture makes it expand and it builds up over time.
Asthma, bronchitis, intestinal blockage and possibly even lung cancer have been reported due to the chemicals which cause this litter to clump and control odour!
KAT’s Miaou uses Feline Fresh pine pellet litter – it’s clean, has a nice natural smell, not nearly as heavy as clumping litter, and safe! The company also has a buy 6 get one free program!
Please share this information with all of your cat-lover friends!
CAT HAIR
Unless you’re willing to shave your cat’s beautiful luxurious coat, your cat will shed. Unlike outdoor cats who generally do their major shedding twice a year, our precious pampered indoor cats shed year-round.
There are ways to minimize the amount of hair on your furniture and clothes and those cat-hair tumbleweeds. Reducing loose hair from your cat’s coat will also decrease hairball frequency.
A variety of de-shedding tools are available – my favorite is the “Furminator”. You’ll be amazed at how much hair it removes. The more often you use it, the less they shed!
Brushing your cat on a regular basis (daily if you can!) is also a good idea – this prevents matting and also removes loose hair. Start this while your cat is young and he / she will enjoy the routine.
Feeding excellent quality cat foods also helps your cat maintain a healthy coat and reduces shedding.
CLAWS
Your kitten’s claws have been trimmed the evening before leaving the cattery. Should you decide to continue this routine, please be sure to use pet nail clippers as human clippers cause their claws to split. An alternative to de-clawing is using nail caps (such as Soft Paws) found in pet stores or veterinary clinics, or ordered online.

A Breeder's Poem
I love my little kitty ......
I love my little kitty, she makes my house a home.
She always is my best friend, I never feel alone.
She makes me smile, she makes me laugh,
She fills my heart with love ...
Did some breeder breed her, or did she fall down from above?
I've never been a breeder, seen life through their eyes,
I hold my little kitty and just sit and criticize.
I've never known their anguish, I've never felt their pain,
The caring of their charges, through snow or wind and rain.
I've never sat the whole night through, waiting for babies to be born,
The stress and trepidation when they're still not there by dawn.
I've never felt the heartache, of a little life in my hands,
This darling little baby, who weighs but 60 grams.
Should you do that instead of this ....or this instead of that,
Alone you fight, and hope one day, he'll grow to be a cat,
and bring joy to another being, and make a house a home,
You know it's all just up to you, you'll fight this fight alone.
Formula, bottles, heating pads, you've got to get this right,
Two hourly feeds for this tiny guy, throughout the day and night.
In your heart you know, you're almost sure to lose the fight,
to save this little baby, but God willing ... you just MIGHT.
Day one he's in there fighting, you say a silent prayer,
Day two & three, he's doing well, with lots of love and care.
Day four & five ... he's still alive, your hopes soar to the heavens,
Day six he slips away again, dies in your hands day seven.
You take this little angel, and bury him alone,
With aching heart and burning tears, and an exhausted groan,
You ask yourself "Why do this? ... why suffer all this pain?"
But see the joy your kittens bring... it really self explains.
So, when you think of breeders and label them with "greed",
Think about what they endure to fill another's need.
When you buy a kitten and with your precious dollars part,
You only pay with money ... we pay with our heart.

BENEFITS OF OWNING A CAT
CHILDREN:
Owning a cat teaches children responsibility and empathy, and provides unconditional love and acceptance.
Exposure to cats in infancy or earlier may reduce the risk of developing animal allergies and asthma.
Therapeutic benefits for children with conditions such as autism have also been found.
ADULTS:
Stroking a cat reduces blood pressure and can even lower cholesterol.
Pets can reduce feelings of loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other negative states.
SENIORS
Many seniors find companionship in owning a cat, especially those who find it hard to get out. And because cats are easy to care for they generally don’t cause a burden.
A growing kitten may be very active, and the cat's activity level may or may not decrease into adulthood. If you have special needs or requirements from a cat, it may be better to pick an older one that has developed its permanent temperament.
